How Much Does Steel Detailing Cost?

Steel detailing cost depends on the pricing model and the complexity of the steel. How is steel detailing priced in the US?

Steel detailing in the US is priced four common ways: by the hour, by the ton of steel, by the drawing sheet, or as a fixed fee for a defined scope. Each method puts the risk of extra hours on a different party, and each can look cheaper or more expensive depending on how complex the steel is.

No model is dishonest by itself. Problems arise when a quote's basis does not match the job: a per-ton price on a stair-and-rail package, or a fixed fee on documents that are still changing.

What drives the cost of a steel detailing package?

Detailing cost follows detailing hours, and hours follow complexity rather than weight. Connection complexity, the density of miscellaneous steel, irregular geometry, incomplete contract documents, revisions, compressed schedules and the deliverables required all add hours. Repetition, complete documents and established shop standards take hours away.

What does in-house steel detailing cost per hour?

An in-house US steel detailer is estimated to cost about $45–$90 per productive hour once salary, payroll taxes, benefits, equipment and non-project time are counted, before a software seat. These are illustrative industry estimates built from stated assumptions, not quotes and not claims about any company; substitute your own payroll figures to get your number.

The arithmetic: $77,000 ÷ 1,700 hours ≈ $45 per hour, and $126,500 ÷ 1,400 hours ≈ $90 per hour.

The hourly figure understates one thing: an in-house detailer's cost continues when the backlog is empty. For a fabricator whose detailing demand rises and falls with bid season, idle weeks raise the real cost per hour actually used.

Why are offshore detailing rates lower?

Offshore detailing rates are lower mainly because salaries and overhead in countries such as India are lower than the loaded cost of detailers in the US. A lower rate does not by itself mean a different standard: drawings for US projects should still follow AISC 303, AISC 360, imperial units and US drawing conventions. What changes is the delivery model.

What hidden costs should you count?

The invoice is only part of what detailing costs. Your own review time, delays while RFIs wait for answers, how revisions are billed, rework and field fixes when drawings are wrong, scrapped material from bad NC files, onboarding a new detailer, and scope items a quote quietly leaves out all belong in the comparison.

  • Your review time. Someone in your company reviews submittals and answers questions, whoever details.
  • RFI delays. Slow answers stall detailing and push fabrication, whatever the rate.
  • Revision billing. Design changes after detailing starts are often billed separately; check the terms.
  • Rework and field fixes. An error caught in the field costs far more than the detailing hours saved.
  • NC errors. A beam line cutting to an outdated or wrong NC file scraps material.
  • Onboarding. A new detailer needs your standards before the first package reads like your shop's drawings.
  • Scope gaps. A quote without erection drawings, NC files or bolt lists is not comparable with one that includes them.

How do you compare two detailing quotes fairly?

Compare detailing quotes on the same scope, the same deliverables and the same assumptions about revisions, not on the headline number. Two quotes can differ by a wide margin simply because one includes erection drawings, NC files and a round of revisions and the other does not. Ask each firm the same questions and put the answers side by side.

How do hours and rates turn into a package cost?

A package's detailing cost is its estimated hours multiplied by the hourly rate, which is why the hour estimate matters as much as the rate.
