Who contracts for steel detailing on a typical project?
On a typical US project the steel fabricator is responsible for shop and erection drawings under AISC 303, and the fabricator either details in-house or engages a detailer. The general contractor holds the fabricator's subcontract and manages the submittal, not the detailer directly. Vertex works within whichever chain your contracts set up.
That chain matters for RFIs and approvals: questions and submittals flow from detailer to fabricator to general contractor to the design team, and answers flow back. If you are arranging steel detailing yourself, for example on a misc metals scope or before a fabricator is selected, confirm at intake who holds responsibility for the drawings under your contracts.
How are steel submittals prepared and tracked?
Steel submittals are organized by specification section, issued with a transmittal that lists every sheet and its revision, and tracked from the approval issue to the fabrication release. On the reference project, the approval issue was Rev A and the fabrication issue Rev 0, so anyone reading a sheet could tell whether it was cleared to build.

How are RFIs handled on the steel scope?
Vertex drafts steel RFIs with sheet, grid and detail references and sends them through the contractual chain to the Engineer of Record or architect. Each RFI is logged with its status. Pieces affected by an open question are held or flagged on the drawings, so detailing continues elsewhere without building on assumptions.

How does the steel model support coordination with other trades?
The SDS/2 model covers the steel, and clash review inside SDS/2 catches steel-to-steel conflicts before drawings are issued. Coordination with mechanical, electrical, plumbing and architectural models happens in the project team's own coordination process, using an IFC export of the steel model. Conflicts found there come back to detailing as RFIs or changes.
Being clear about that split avoids a common assumption: a detailer's clash review is not a multi-trade coordination review. If your project runs model coordination meetings, ask for the IFC export at intake and agree how often it is refreshed as the steel model develops.
What do erection drawings give the field team?
Erection drawings give the erector and your site team the plans, elevations and sections that show where every piece mark goes, with field connection details and field bolt lists. How is miscellaneous steel handled on a general contractor's project?
Miscellaneous steel, such as stairs, handrails, ladders, embeds and canopies, is often a separate specification section and sometimes a separate subcontract. Its biggest schedule risk for a general contractor is embeds: they must be detailed, approved and delivered before the concrete pours they are cast into, so they are released ahead of the rest of the misc steel.

What does steel detailing cost, and who pays for it?

Who pays depends on your contracts: in most cases detailing is part of the fabricator's price, and the general contractor pays for it through the steel subcontract rather than directly. Frequently asked questions
Can steel detailing be accelerated when the submittal is behind schedule?
Sometimes. A compressed schedule needs complete documents, fast RFI answers and a phased release, and turnaround pressure moves the hourly rate toward $20. Review cycles by the design team still have to fit inside the schedule.
Can you provide an IFC model for coordination?
The SDS/2 steel model can be exported to IFC for the project's coordination process. Ask for it at intake and agree how often it should be refreshed as detailing progresses.
Who reviews and approves the steel shop drawings?
